Adult Bronze Medallion Course
“Gain your Bronze Medallion, make lifelong friendships, and serve our community. Learn critical skills in lifesaving, surf awareness, first aid, health, fitness, leadership, and contribute to our community. ”
Run over two consecutive weekends for adults.
The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.
This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. After the completion of this course, you can go on to qualify to pilot a rescue water craft, inflatable rescue boats, rescue helicopter crew, professional lifeguard, specialist first aid, rescue coordination and more!

The adult bronze medallion course will be run on the following weekends:
- Session 1 & 2 - Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November 2024
- Session 3 & 4 - Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November 2024
- Friday night sessions may be included (TBC)
Cost: $275
This course is designed to be flexible for adults with commitments such as family
Theory is covered online in candidates' own time
Practical lessons held over consecutive weekends
Evaluation on the final day
Course cost includes: training materials, evaluation, season membership, patrol uniform (cap, t-shirt, shorts) and commemorative course t-shirt
Not included: food, bathers, wetsuit, fins
Bring: food, bathers, wetsuit, surf fins, sunscreen
Participants will have an opportunity to purchase specialist surf fins at a discount thanks to Island Surf (budget approximately $60)
+ Course Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment. 15-17 year olds can register for Bronze camp. 13-14 year olds can register for our Surf Rescue Certificate course.
- You must be able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes unaided in a pool of at least 25m in length, or over a measured open water course, prior to undertaking any water training or assessment activities. Dates and Times will be communicated via email once enrolled into the course.

- Contribute to the management of work health and safety (WHS)
- Follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control
- Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards
- Recognise appropriate beach types, conditions and areas in the surfzone for bathing
- Demonstrate surf skills
- Explain the functions of various systems in the human body
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques
- Perform basic resuscitation techniques (oxygen therapy, defibrillation)
- Identify basic patient management techniques
- Communicate in the workplace
- Perform radio communications using approved SLSA radios
- Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
- Identify people in distress in an aquatic environment
- Perform surf skills
- Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment
- Set up a patrol and describe your role on patrol
- Demonstrate standard patrol practices
- Work as part of a team
- Improve fitness

- The Bronze Medallion Award is the core award to be a lifesaver in Australia and so must be re-qualified every year at a Skills Maintenance day run by:
