Smiths Beach Rescue Base

Smiths Beach Rescue Base was installed at Smiths Beach, Phillip Island’s most popular beach, on Wednesday 2 May 2018. The base is designed as a satellite facility to Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, who staff the base and drove the project to provide an observation tower, first aid facility and shelter for volunteer surf life savers and the paid lifeguard service.

Benefits to the public

  • Elevated observation position provides better viewing of swimmers

  • First aid facilities and ramp access for paramedics, wheelchairs and gurneys

  • Shelter for volunteer lifesavers

Help keep it as an asset!

Unfortunately since it’s inception the tower has been stripped down by the harsh weather conditions from the beach.

The rescue base is need of urgent upgrades (including re-painting in oil-rig spec paint) in order to avoid Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) issues / the structure becoming condemned; and to ensure that the two structures can continue serving the Phillip Island Nature Park (PINP) / Bass Coast Shire Council (BCSC) residents and visitors and Life Saving Victoria (LSV) lifeguard service over the next 20-25 years.

The required works includes

  • Wall panel works

  • Stair removal and replacement

  • Insitu painting works
