Remote Piloted Aircraft Service Pilot (RPAS)

“Learn the skills and knowledge to safely operate a Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPA), during the lifesaving period”


The Remote Piloted Aircraft Service (RPAS) arial support for all patrolling members and services on all patrol days throughout the season. The RPAS can be utilised to conduct surveillance at major LSV events, rescue operations, marine creature detection and is deployed to assist other emergency agencies with state emergency events such as floods and bushfires.

+ About the Role

As an LSV RPAS Pilot, members would be expected to be readily available to attend rostered shifts and training through the course of the season. From time to time Pilots will also be required to assist in RPAS deployment to a variety of exercises, response activities and/or events. Due to the time and cost involved in training Pilots, a minimum commitment of two (2) years is expected of an applicant, notwithstanding exceptional circumstances. In addition to any RPAS duties you will be expected to continue to have active involvement in your club and complete your club beach patrol commitments.

+ Minimum Criteria

To be suitable to submit an application you must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Be a minimum 19 years of age as at the time of submitting an Expression of Interest
  • Be a current financial and proficient member of a Life Saving Victoria affiliated Life Saving Club or Service
  • Have completed a minimum of three (3) years active beach patrol in Victoria
  • Have an excellent record of patrol attendance
  • Current Drivers License
  • Current Working with Children Check
  • Gain written endorsement from Club President, Secretary or Club Captain

+ Pre-requisites

If you do not hold these qualifications you cannot apply for this position. All awards must be current and will be checked by Lifesaving Victoria.

  • You must be a current financial member of of a Life Saving Victoria affiliated Life Saving Club or Service
  • First Aid
  • Radio Operator’s Certificate (or Bronze Medallion)

Desirable Qualifications/Experience

  • Remote Pilot’s License
  • Aeronautical Radio Operator’s Certificate
  • 5 hours of logged flight time on a 4 blade multi-copter

Other Requirements

  • Be flexible and available to attend necessary internal and external training sessions
  • Commit to two (2) seasons of service with the LSV RPAS Service
  • RPAS Pilots should be flexible with availability and can expect to be rostered on to an average of at least 2 shifts per week during the peak summer period (Boxing Day to Aus Day Weekend).
  • During the patrol season outside of the peak summer period, RPAS Pilots should expect to be rosteredon at least one weekend per month.
