Vale Peter James “Doc” Mannix

13/5/1944 – 7/05/2024

Peter  ‘Doc’ Mannix was known to his large circle of friends, clients and acquaintances around Melbourne, and at the Island, as someone who was good company over a convivial drink but also as a devoted family man, avid fisherman, keen golfer, good squash player, smart accountant and businessman, hard worker, racing aficionado and dedicated Geelong supporter. This meant that when he moved into the same street at Woolamai Waters as Al & Pete Lawry and Murray Adams it would only be a matter of time before he was sharing a cold ale and some tall stories with them and many other Woolie Members he came to meet over the years.

Doc was also a very loyal friend and once he and Lynne were settled into the Woolie Surf Club as Social Members they were always willing to help in any way they could and soon he and his great mate, Ernie Toward, were sponsoring the club financially and they paid for the first televisions set up in the social area of the club. Then the two of them put their hands up, along with wives Lynne & Gail, to help out at the Channel Challenge at every event for the past two decades or more. Doc & Ernie were responsible for the shoe run back and forth across the bridge while Lynne and Gail slogged it out in the race centre. The van was supplied by Doc’s son, Paul, who has been another great supporter of the club as have been Paul’s siblings, Jodi & Jason.

We have all enjoyed the company and involvement of Doc and his family at the club and many a function has led to a laugh and a chat well into the late hours out on the balcony or occasionally in the Sanny Pub.

Doc has had a great life and squeezed as much out of his nearly 80 years on this planet as he possibly could (he would have been 80 today - 13/5) and when we send him off on Friday it will be to commemorate a good and loyal friend and celebrate a life well lived with his legacy being his large loving family and the many great friends who have been fortunate to share his life.

Smiths Beach Rescue Base Repairs - Donations needed

Unfortunately since it’s inception the Smiths beach tower has been stripped down by the harsh weather conditions from the beach.

The rescue base is need of urgent repairs and maintenance (including re-painting in oil-rig spec paint) in order to avoid Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) issues / the structure becoming condemned; and to ensure that the two structures can continue serving the Phillip Island Nature Park (PINP) / Bass Coast Shire Council (BCSC) residents and visitors and Life Saving Victoria (LSV) lifeguard service over the next 20-25 years.

The required works includes

  • Wall panel works

  • Stair removal and replacement

  • Insitu painting works

If you’d like to donate to this cause please head to https://www.woolamaibeach.org.au/donate and select ‘Smiths Beach Rescue Base’ when filling out the donation form.
