Message of support - Brian “Reggie” Whittaker.
To our wonderful Lifeguards/Lifesavers that attended the tragic incident yesterday at Forrest Caves I would like to say thank you for your extraordinary efforts. Firstly, my heart goes out to the four individuals that lost their lives and their families that will be dealing with their loss.
I feel obliged to write this message as my thoughts are also for our Lifeguards/Lifesavers. Many years ago when I was Chief Lifeguard we had a similar situation where we attended the drowning of three individuals (including one 12 year old that was never recovered) at Forrest Caves and Surfies Point. I do not know the full details of what happened yesterday, however, to those that attended the incident please know that the work that you performed was important in so many ways.
You all need to understand that you gave those people a chance of survival, you rescued them from the surf and returned them all to the beach where resuscitation could be performed to again give them a chance of survival. It may be difficult to understand at this time but although lives were lost you should be proud of your efforts. Although it will not dull their pain, the family members on the beach saw your efforts and will know that their loved ones were given every chance.
You are great Lifeguards/Lifesavers, no question, as much as I don’t like to admit it you are better than I ever was but that is what I love about our members, you continually improve.
Please know that this great Club can provide/arrange important support, our President Jason Close, Club Captain Campbell Smart and many others are there to support you if needed, please do not hesitate to speak to someone, it may not be now, it may be in days/weeks to come.
Regards and take care,
Brian “Reggie” Whittaker

Channel Challenge Race Centre
Hi all
I am coordinating a team to run the downstairs part of the Channel Challenge Race Centre. This is where competitors collect a t-shirt and race pack and drop off their shoes. We set up in the bottleshop drive through.
Looking for volunteers for one, or both, of the following Saturday morning shifts:
Shift 1 - 7.30 to 10 - set up, compile race packs and assist competitors (6-8 volunteers needed)
Shift 2 - 10 to 12 - assist competitors (10-11.45 likely to be peak competitor time) and pack up (8-10 volunteers needed)
If you are helping with water safety Shift 1 would be best.
Please contact Georgie Wettenhall wettenhallg@gmail.com if you are keen to get involved. No lifesaving experience needed so suitable for all members (13+) or friends of the club.
Water Safety Needed - Cardinia Primary School
Every February Cardinia Primary School holds a picnic at Cowes Beach on Phillip Island. They take their whole school and many families come too!
They have a beach walk, a sandcastle building competition, a BBQ and then a play in the water. During the water play we have 8 teachers standing in a rectangle no deeper than thigh deep in the water. The children are invited to play in the water within this rectangle.
If any lifesavers are available to spend an hour of their time at Cowes please reach out to Carole.
Friday, 16th February, 2024.
The time for the water play is 12:45-1:45
If anyone can help please reach out to secretary@woolamaibeach.asn.au
