Hannah began her life saving journey in 2009. ‘From the moment I began I was instantly hooked, finding myself gaining more awards and taking on additional roles within my club.’ Hannah has been a Patrol Captain for the mighty Sandmen patrol and currently run the Woolamai Beach SLSC Bronze Camps. This year Hannah was lucky enough to take up the role of the Chief Lifeguard of Bass Coast.

What inspired you to join the surf life saving movement?

After completing my Surf Rescue Certificate, I was inspired by all of the incredible club members at Woolamai and the opportunities they were exposed to through being a part of surf life saving! I wanted to feel safer and more confident in the water and make some amazing friends along the way.

Why should females within our community participate in the surf life saving movement?

In 2011 when I was a candidate on bronze camp, there were 8 girls beside me. This year I was lucky enough to run the camp and see 22 girls successfully achieve their bronze medallion! It’s so special to see such an increasing amount of females involving themselves in surf lifesaving. There are so many different opportunities and so many great people offering support along the way!

What opportunities have been offered to you through the surf life saving movement?

Surf life saving has given me so many incredible opportunities that I am so grateful for. I have learnt so many skills that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life. My proudest opportunity so far was when I represented Life Saving Victoria in Sri Lanka in 2018, training and mentoring local lifesavers, police, navy and coast guards.

What would you say to a young girl considering joining her local surf club?

Don’t hesitate and sign up! The opportunities within Life Saving are endless! There is so much support available and a huge network of passionate females excited to inspire and mentor you throughout your journey.
