What inspired you to join the surf life saving movement?

I’d always been a strong swimmer and loved the beach. The opportunity to do surf lifesaving as a school subject was something I couldn’t refuse. I love being able to learn new skills, keep people safe at the beach and hang out with the rest of the Wooli family.

Why should females within our community participate in the surf life saving movement?

Why shouldn’t you? If you love the water, the beach, meeting new people, helping people, being active or generally just having a fun time, then give it a crack. There’s nothing stopping you. It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone and one where you’re not going to be largely overshadowed by guys. There are plenty of girls and women in surf lifesaving to look up to, and we’re all more than happy to show you the ropes.

What opportunities have been offered to you through the surf life saving movement?

I’ve been able to learn a bunch of skills and gain a bunch of awards, all of which are great to know, like First aid, Spinal management, Advanced resuscitation techniques, and my personal favourite, Crewing in the IRD’s. I’ve had the opportunity to meet great people and also step into a leadership role for our patrol group. And I know there are dozens more opportunities to jump on for me in the future.

What would you say to a young girl considering joining her local surf club?

I’ll see you at the beach. Come down and show the world what you’re made of.
