President’s report
Hi everyone
At our recent Annual General Meeting I was very honoured to become the President of the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
It was another great honour to be announced as President by John Thomson, one of our esteemed Life Governors. Thommo was actually Club President when I joined the Club 40 years ago. He is someone who just keeps on giving and giving back to the Club and always has a few projects on the go.
I would like to thank the previous Board for all of their hard work over several years to put the Club in the great position it is in today.
Mark Bain, Max Eldridge, Stafford Smith, Josh Cottier, Charles Tuchtan and Hugo Richter our retiring Board members, along with Annie Coleman, Brendan Smart, Darrell Clark and Ryan Box who have returned to the Board for another season have accomplished so much. They provided the Club with strong leadership, governance, cultural improvements, people development, patrolling and training excellence, strong communication, financial growth, lots of improvements to the Clubhouse, an awesome Nippers program and special events that go from strength to strength. Doing all of this while guiding us through two years of Covid has been no easy feat.
Of course there are so many others who have made significant contributions to the Club and continue to do so.
The new Board is looking forward to building on all of this great work.
As a father of two daughters who are now patrolling and contributing to the Club, I am thrilled to see that we have now have 4 female Board members as well as a spread of age and experience across the Board which reflects our diversity as a Club.
The new Board held our first meeting last week and it was exciting to hear our new and returning Board members outline their goals for the season.
One of our big challenges this season will be building a team around each Board portfolio so that many hands make light work.
Over the coming months we will be calling for people to put their hands up to take on different roles or be a part of a team to help deliver our various activities and programs. Some of these roles are just as important, if not more important than those on the Board.
When you see an ad in the newsletter or a post in Facebook looking for help, put your hand up -you never know where it might lead, what you might learn and how rewarding it can be!
As we get closer to summer it is great to see some of the things going on down at the Clubhouse.
We have recently had much of the all abilities access ramp deck and rails replaced and stainless steel caps put on the ramp posts. We are currently getting quotes to reduce and revegetate some of the dunes around the Clubhouse and build a retaining wall. Much of this work is being funded by a Commonwealth government Building Better Regions Fund grant. A huge thank you to Stafford Smith for all of the work he has been putting into these projects along with representatives of the Phillip Island Nature Park and Life Saving Victoria.
The Clubhouse roof is about to be repaired and some work is also being done outside the Clubhouse to lower some of the underground electric cables near our driveway entrance. There will be many other Clubhouse improvements between now and summer. Our Assets team is looking for new members and help with some of these projects so we would love to hear from you.
On Saturday 6 August the Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence were held at the Sofitel Hotel in Collins Street, Melbourne. It was a terrific evening which showcased all of the amazing achievements by the 60 or so Clubs around the State.
I would like to congratulate Sophia Hungerford (Youth Life Saver of the Year 14-17 years) , Ryan Box, Joshua Williams (Youth Life Saver of the Year 18-21 Years) , Charles Tuchtan (Nipper Volunteer of the Year) and our Nippers program (Best Nippers Program) for their award nominations. Unfortunately we did not come away with the prizes but just being nominated is a huge achievement. We are very proud of all of you for your incredible efforts and commitment to the Club.
See you down the beach soon.
Regards,
Jason Close - President
