What season did you join the club?
I joined Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club in the 2017 - 2018 season, earning my bronze medallion through the Upwey High SLS class.
Why did you become involved in Surf Life Saving?
Since Year 8, I’ve known I wanted to become a surf life saver. In that year, Stafford Smith bought my year level on a surf camp to Phillip Island where we visited the surf club and spent heaps of time in the water at Smith’s beach. It was an awesome experience and one of my favourite memories of Highschool this far, I loved being in the beach environment and hearing about the club from my teachers; I knew it was a pathway I was really interested in and hoping to become involved in.
What keeps you coming back every season?
What has attracted me most about potentially joining the Woolamai Beach SLSC board, is the opportunity to both expand my understanding of the versatile nature of our beach and home as well as having a greater ability to support my peers and patrol. I can find comfort in knowing I feel prepared and equipped with the knowledge of SLS to help people and my club whenever needed. I think it is a great and highly rewarding opportunity which should be grabbed with both hands.
Who were/are your mentors in Surf Life Saving?
Many members of Woolamai SLSC have inspired me and motivated me to strive for improvement in myself. The support and encouragement I have been shown since my first season is what I love about our club. Some of my greatest mentors would be Stafford Smith, who has guided myself and many others into the program and never given up on me. My patrol captain, Campbell Smart, who is always making our team laugh and smile whilst leading us and keeping our beach’s safe. And fellow sandman Jay Haig, who is always teaching me new things about our beautiful beach as well as helping me brave massive waves and rips which I wouldn’t have swam in 3 years ago.
What do you love most about being a Surf Life Saver at Woolamai Beach SLSC?
I am always looking for opportunities to improve my skills and gain experience in our club. There are so many layers to becoming a great life guard, that their is always something to keep me developing into the person I hope to become. My goal is to one day become a paramedic and I believe surf life saving is the ideal pathway to help me reach that goal as well as equip me with more than just skills on the beach. This far, surf life saving has taught me to never quit and always give 101%, and given me some of the greatest friends I have and a whole other life other than home
