Question 1: What season did you join the club?

I joined Woolamai SLSC in the 2016-2017 season through the Upwey High School program.

Question 2: Why did you become involved in Surf Life Saving?

I decided to do the Upwey SLS program to try something new that I normally wouldn't do. I had the chance to be involved in a really exciting and different program that allowed me to get my bronze medallion and many other qualifications after that. Before I joined Woolamai, the beach was such a foreign place for me, I used to look at Woolamai and it's insane surf and think that “I'll never go out in that”, but now I find myself seeking out the bigger surf to not just have a fun time but to better my skills. Thanks to Woolamai SLSC I feel that being down at the beach is being home.

Question 3: What keeps you coming back every season?

The different mix of people there with a vast array of knowledge and experience, in not just Surf Life Saving but also in life, it is really like one big family. I also love to give people the amazing experiences that I have had through my time at Woolamai as well as pass down what I have learnt from all my mentors to the younger Surf Life savers. I also have a big passion for helping at the club and making sure that our equipment can be in the best shape possible, so that my peers can use what we have to it's best potential and have the best time possible.

Question 4: Who were/are your mentors in Surf Life Saving?

To only pick a few mentors is really hard. If I were to name the 2 most significant mentors, Stafford Smith would have to be one of my biggest influences and mentors. Stafford taught me not just how to be a good life saver and how to complete rescues successfully, but more importantly to be a respectful, kind and considerate person. Stafford said a lot that has stuck with me since year 9, and since doing the SLS program through Upwey which Stafford teaches alongside many other great teachers, he has been a great role model and mentor to look up to and to strive to be like. My second mentor is Max Eldridge. Since joining in 2016 I always saw Max putting in mass amount of effort into all our programs, training and events. Seeing this really gave me a sense that if I were to do well I would need to try and go above what I felt was enough. Max inspired me to become a leader at the Surf club, starting with my first role as Mobile Equipment officer, that has now turned into many other leadership roles. Max has not just been a mentor for SLS for me, but his display of leadership in countless areas has been my bases of a good leader and inspired me to be a leader in a lot of other areas such as SES, CFA and any other opportunity I get to lead.

Question 5: What do you love most about being a Surf Lifesaver at Woolamai Beach SLSC?

I love the experiences and memories that I have gained from Woolamai. I have made memories and friends that will last a lifetime and I hope to make many more as woolamai is a massive part of me!
